- Rei's birth parents were killed by a youma when he was only two years old. There was some trauma, and a lot of magic involved, which is what caused his split personality and his inability to remember anything but his name and age.
Rei is of Irish descent, we think. He was found in the middle of a park in Japan by a group of magical girls, alone, when he was two years old. He remembered two things: his first name and his age. He was then adopted by the Kanatas, and he has since been raised as a Japanese boy, though he certainly doesn't look the part.
His parents decided to move to the US when he was sixteen, right before he started his junior year of high school. He didn't have a choice, so he went along with it. Luckily for him, one of his good friends from the internet just happened to live in the exact same area that he moved to, so he wasn't too lonely.
Rei is a nickname that he got because he was a very introverted person until high school. One of his few friends decided that he was cold, so she started calling him Rei. He liked it much more than his real name, Dana, so it stuck. He likes the name even more now that he lives in the US, since the people here pronounce his name the way it was supposed to be pronounced, and he hates it.
Rei is homosexual, and not ashamed of that. He was out in Japan, though he decided to lay low for a while when he moved to the US, because he was afraid of being shunned around people he didn't know. He had one boyfriend when he was in Japan, and though things didn't work out between them, they are still friends. He is the one who gave him the dragon pendant that he always wears. He fell in lust with a guy one year older than him his first day of school in the US, and it was because of that guy, named Scott, that he got involved in what he later found out was his destiny.
Because he was under the impression that Scott hated gays (it was a wrong impression, by the way), Rei never let himself confess his attraction for Scott. Instead, he thought long and hard, and eventually decided to become a magical girl (courtesy of a want ad that he saw by accident). This allowed him to turn into a girl, and thus confess his attraction for the other guy without fear of being hated for being male.
Unfortuantely, being a magical girl came with some strings...in the form of having to fight bad guys and two miniature winged bishounen that look more or less like copies of him (except that one is pallette swapped with black hair and purple eyes). As a magical girl, Rei is Sol, with powers of light and fire.
Rei acts like a normal teenager most of the time. He isn't overly happy, but he isn't depressed either. He's not terribly disappointed in his life, even when he is having problems like being in lust with a guy who he thinks hates everything to do with homosexuality. He is quite fond of anime, and misses being able to watch it on Japanese television. He does not see the dubbed versions on American TV as a reasonable substitute, though he has gotten quite fond of fansubs. Over everything else, he loves mahou shoujo anime, even after he becomes one himself, especially Sailor Moon.
Rei does have one rather extreme psychological problem. The death of his parents, in addition to the magic that was flying when it happened, caused his mind to split slightly, and then hide the part of him that was traumatized by the event. That is why he cannot remember anything from before it happened. Unfortunately, the part of him that has been hiding is not a very nice person and has a slight grudge against people in general, especially magical girls. He calls himself Umbra, and when he gets loose (later in the story), Rei's hair and eyes turn to black and purple, much like his other mascot's. Unlike normal, male, Rei, Umbra has magic of his own. But, to make up for it, the dark version of Sol (transformed Umbra) is more or less powerless.
Despite the fact that he has quite a few sets of female clothing for use when he is in female form, Rei is not fond of cross dressing. He may look slightly feminine at times and like guys, but that doesn't mean he really wants to be a girl or anything. Nor does he enjoy wearing pantyhose, high heels, or skirts. He is also less than fond of having large breasts when transformed, and if he knew that he could get away with being with Scott while untransformed, he would jump on the chance in a heartbeat.
