- something interesting:
- When she was little, her mother gave her a stuffed rabbit during a family visit. It later became her most treasured possession, though she forgot it when she fled the school. She plans to give it to her daughter someday.
Kiya is the youngest child of Isuni and Alansa. Her older sister, Dua, is four years older than she is. She also has a twin brother, Pernist, who is thirty minutes older than she is. She is not terribly close to any of her family, since she was placed in Knight Shelon School less than a week after her birth. Still, she has gotten to know her mother and sister fairly well during both official and unofficial family visits to the school, and she is quite fond of them.
Her father, also known as Lord Isuni by many people, is an intelligent and powerful mayin. He is also a very arrogant and proud man and very much a believer in the ideals put forth by Mayinism. He takes the male and mayin superiority that is inherent in Mayinism to the fullest extents and requires that those around him do so as well. He comes from a long line of mayin men and was fully expecting to have his son carry on the tradition. His only son, Pernist, was born quarun. Because of her gender, he did not have the mayin tests performed on Kiya, and thus missed realizing that she was mayin. Instead, he declared her shelon (she was obviously blind) and had her placed in a shelon school almost immediately. He treats her like a slave, when he has anything to do with her at all, and she hates him for it.
Kiya sees the people she was with at the shelon school as a closer family than the ones who are related to her. The teachers there were all quite fond of her and helped her grow up into a fine young woman, especially once they realized she was mayin, with more mayin powers than any other mayin they had ever seen. When other smart students were given to the school they became her best friends and substitue brothers and sisters. Though it wasn't a horrid childhood, Kiya was always aware of the fact that she wasn't allowed to leave the school while she was growing up, and that most people outside of the school thought of her and her friends as freaks, or as inferior people. Because of that, she grew up wishing that she could do something to change the society she was born to, so that she would be able to live happily outside of the school.
She loves to learn more than almost anything else in life. Singing is a close second, followed by reading, which allowed her mind to escape the world she lived in when she was younger. Up until the point where she was convinced to take the position of head of the Council she was set on going into some kind of science, most likely chemistry.
She has quite a bit of charisma and is a natural leader, though she never actually realized it. She just fell into the part of unspoken leader of the smart students at the shelon school because they realized it, and because none of them wanted to be the leader. That is just one of the many things that make her quite similar to her father (he was quite a good leader, if you didn't mind his obsessive almost-hatred of women and she-'s/shelon). Unfortunately, mention of these similarities between her and her father almost always spark her considerable temper.
She is married to Jalki, a young mayin who she meets at the beginning of her story. She loves him dearly. They have a newborn daughter named Hope (technically she isn't born yet by the end of the story...). She is mayin, just like her mother and father, though without most of the extra powers they have.
